Elevation is a 2018 Novel written by Stephen King. This 132 page slim volume packs a powerful punch, delivering a narrative that is both haunting and thought-provoking. Like other Stephen King’s writing Elevation is a skillfully crafted story that captivates the readers.
The story follows Scott Carey, a man who is inexplicably losing weight, despite no change in his diet or lifestyle. As Scott’s weight dwindles, he finds himself confronting the darker aspects of his own nature, as well as the prejudices and biases of those around him.
One of the standout features of “Elevation” is its exploration of the complexities of human identity. King skillfully probes the ways in which our physical bodies shape our sense of self, and how the loss of weight can lead to a disorienting sense of disconnection from one’s own body.
The writing is, as always, superb. King’s prose is economical, yet evocative, conjuring a sense of atmosphere and mood that is both unsettling and mesmerizing. The characters are well-drawn and nuanced, with Scott’s inner turmoil and emotional struggles rendered with particular sensitivity.
Only criticism I could find to this book was that it was too small. Some characters feel truncated and the premise could have been discussed more. But that’s Stephen King, too concise.
Most of all I loved the playful wit of the writer, how he describes the town or took a dig at some characters. He brings the vision to the memory with his word, like for instance he wrote, “He rose slowly from the chair, the coverlet trailing below him like the hem of a long skirt, feeling absurdly like Mary Poppins, Minus the umbrella.”
Overall “Elevation” is a gripping and unsettling read that will appeal to fans of King’s more introspective and psychologically complex works. It’s a powerful exploration of the human condition, and a testament to King’s enduring ability to craft stories that are both haunting and thought-provoking
Rating: 4/5 stars
Recommendation: Once you get through the first chapter, the rest of the book will sweep you along like a marathon. 🚀
